    • May Linux Meeting above the Food Co-op

We’ll be meeting above the People’s Food Co-op in the office conference room on Thursday May 16th starting at 6pm. The conference room is all the way in the back in the staff office area on the second floor.

      Here’s a Google Maps location:

      https://www.google.com/maps/place/People’s+Food+Co-op/@43.8093567,-91.2522029,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x87f95509c3c2a955:0x26049fcdf08a1ec!8m2!3d43.8093567!4d-91.2500142?hl=en

      Topic is FreeCAD.

Phil will most likely be presenting, but other people may also be contributing as well. There’s good documentation for FreeCAD:

FreeCAD is also available for macOS and Windows.

    • Linux home automation and NextCoud - Thursday June 21st

      Hi everyone,

Our monthly Linux meeting is 6:00 - 8:00(ish) Thursday, June 21st at the People’s Food Co-op on 5th Street in La Crosse. We meet in the room on second floor. There’s an elevator in addition to stairs.

Topics are likely to include a presentation on a Linux based home automation system and more information on NextCloud. We’ll also wrap up the more “formal” part of our meeting around 7:45 to allow time for smaller group conversations and collaboration on projects. We have the room until 9pm and the co-op is open until 10pm.

      Hope to see you there!

    • Enable NextCloud to be accessed by other computers on network

      Hello,

After my presentation, I did set up NextCloud on one of my own servers in my home network. To get it to be seen by other computers on the network, I had to run at least these two commands:

sudo snap set nextcloud ports.http=80 ports.https=443

This allows connections to port 80 from other machines, but https still won’t work even though the port is open. To enable that with a self signed certificate:

      sudo nextcloud.enable-https self-signed

After that, all web traffic was redirected to https, but your browser will give you a warning that it isn’t a valid certificate. You’ll have to add a security exception to your browser to actually get the login page to show up.

      I hope that’s helpful.

I’ve been happily experimenting with NextCloud on the home nextwork. Gave my wife and kids accounts and we’ll experiment with it. So far, I really like it.

    • We meet on the third Thursday of every month - next up is May 17th

Just a general announcement for people looking for information about our group.

We meet on the third Thursday of every month, usually at the People’s Food Co-op in La Crosse. Meeting time with presentation is from 6:00 - 7:45, with time for small group discussion and hangouts afterwards.

In May, our topic is NextCloud. Quite a few people in our group are already using this and we’ll hear from a few of them. NextCloud is an open source private cloud server software that you can host yourself or pay someone else to host for you.

You can use it for Calendar, Contacts, file sync/sharing and much more.

    • April Meeting is on Thursday the 19th at the Food Co-op

      Hi everyone,

We’ll be meeting on Thursday evening starting at 6:00 in the upstairs meeting room of The People’s Food Co-op in La Crosse. Entrance with stairs and elevator to the second floor is on 5th Street.

      Topic

We will postpone the presentation on NextCloud, as the people who wanted to speak on this topic won’t be available this month.

Instead Bob will be presenting on Scuttlebutt, which is a decentralized social network.

      alt text

Here’s what Bob shared about it on the Google Group:

Actually, if you want to do a scuttlebutt install-fest, I might want
      to do a little preparation.

      Here’s what it’s about:
      https://staltz.com/an-off-grid-social-network.html
      https://www.scuttlebutt.nz/

You could install before the meeting if you want, but it’s fairly
      quick to install:
      https://www.scuttlebutt.nz/#quick-start

The prep is for step 3 where they tell you to “Go to the list of pub
servers and get an invite code from one.”

That’s been very difficult lately. I would want to check around
tomorrow before the meeting and make sure somebody has a pub with
      invitations ready to go.

If we get to the meeting, you’ll be able to see all the local
scuttlers on wifi anyway and I can probably find a pub invite on the
spot. But would be better to arrange something beforehand.

Don’t worry if none of this is understandable except for the first
couple of links, which I hope are. And as always, if nobody wants to
do this, it’s ok with me. I’m coming to the meeting anyway.

I look forward to seeing you there!
